In an effort to be more environmentally responsible, we favor working reclaimed Douglas Fir. Beams 40 to 100+ years old provide us with seasoned stock that is rich in character and stable by virtue. Another environmentally friendly option is Red Alder, a species which produces merchantable timber in 25 to 40 years. Alder's warm tones and interesting grain figure make attractive doors. We laminate Alder door stiles to build in stability. The amount of character wood in either Fir or Alder is varied according to your taste.

Book matching character wood
creates a sophisticated rustic door.

We believe thicker doors feel good and typically build them 1 3/4", 2 1/4" or 3 1/8" thick. Rails and stiles are joined by mortise and tenon. Panel planks accommodate humidity swings floating on a loose spline system. Character wood, knots, checks etc. are filled and stabilized with epoxy. Doors are sanded to 120 grit ready for finish.
Robust dual tenon joinery provides
3 1/8" thick doors with additional strength.

The doors are prehung in jambs equally stout and well crafted. With radiused top doors and jambs as our forte, the range of possibilities for custom units with sidelights and transoms is unlimited. Very large units are reassembled and glazed on site. We use American made McKinney bearing hinges sized appropriately for thicker doors.
